The Guitar Student’s Back to School Supply List

It’s that time of year everyone is checking their school supplies list. Many students are starting guitar lessons as well, and figuring out what you actually need seems overwhelming!

Here is a short and simple list of everything you really need for acoustic guitar lessons…minus the guitar of course! (Each picture leads to an Amazon affiliate link to an inexpensive product I recommend for my students.)

Snark Multi-Instrument Chromatic Tuner - Terry Carter Music Store

TUNER. A clip-on tuner is the best tuning option because it reads the vibration of the guitar. The next best option is downloading a tuning app, such as GuitarTuna.

Fender 351 Celluloid Medley Guitar Pick Pack - Set of 12 Picks

PICKS. I personally prefer medium picks. They are the Goldilocks of picks, not to hard, not too soft, just right.

Fender x Kyser Quick-Change Electric Guitar Capo (Shell Pink)

CAPO. This little contraption is amazing. It can help change the song to fit the student’s vocal range and is needed in many songs.

GUITAR STRAP. Helps hold the guitar in place, stand and play, and it looks cool!

GUITAR STAND

I can’t tell you how many students tell me they felt like playing and practicing more after getting a stand. Having the guitar handy and displayed is inspiring! It also keeps it from being tossed on a bed or falling after being propped against a wall. I personally love hanging my guitars on the wall like art!

GIG BAG. Keep that gorgeous guitar safe while you travel to the beach, the campfire, school talent shows and open mics!

HUMIDIFIER. A guitar humidifier keeps the wood in good shape and crack-free. Dry climates are especially brutal on guitars. Just wet the sponge, stick this in between the strings and place the guitar in a case overnight every once in a while.

Of course you may need new strings down the road, but this list will be everything you need to get you or your young musician playing their favorite songs or writing their own on acoustic guitar!
